Ceramic Coating or PPF Film — Which One Should You Choose for Your Car?

It's one of the most common questions we hear in the studio: ceramic coating or PPF paint protection film? Both protect your paintwork, but in completely different ways. There's no single right answer for everyone — it all depends on how you use your car and what you expect from the protection.

What Is a Ceramic Coating?

A ceramic coating is a liquid product that, once applied and cured, forms a thin, hard layer on the paint. Its main jobs are:

• hydrophobicity — water and dirt run off the surface, so the car stays clean longer,
• easier washing — grime sticks less to the smooth coating,
• depth and gloss to the paint,
• protection against UV radiation and minor chemical contaminants.

What a ceramic coating doesn't do: it isn't armour. It won't protect the paint from stone chips or deeper scratches. It's surface protection, not an impact-absorbing layer.

What Is PPF Paint Protection Film?

PPF film (short for Paint Protection Film) is a clear film applied directly to the paintwork. At Eighteen Wraps we work with Hexis film. Unlike a ceramic coating, PPF is a physical layer that actually absorbs impacts:

• protects against stone chips, sand, and minor abrasions,
• covers the most exposed parts — front bumper, bonnet, sills, mirrors, door edges,
• many PPF films have a self-healing effect for fine scratches under heat,
• can cover the whole car or just the most exposed panels.

The Key Difference in One Sentence

A ceramic coating takes care of the paint's look and cleanliness. PPF film protects it mechanically against damage.

That's exactly why these two solutions don't rule each other out — quite the opposite.

Can You Combine the Two?

Yes — and very often that's the best choice. PPF film goes on the most exposed panels (like the front of the car), while ceramic coating covers the rest of the bodywork. The car ends up with both protection against chips and a hydrophobic, easy-to-clean surface everywhere else.

Which One Should You Choose?

• You drive a lot on motorways / long trips → PPF on the front should be your priority (stone chips are the biggest risk).
• You mainly care about shine and easy washing → a ceramic coating is all you need.
• You want maximum protection for a new car → combine PPF and ceramic coating.
